Relationship Chart

If you're like me, then the question of any cousins relationship beyond first cousin gets confusing. Here is a chart that will hopefully help to clear up that confusion. I'll give you an example of Nate Gray and myself. I'll use Peyton Gray as our common ancestor, on the top row I go to number 4, Great Grandson, that's my relationship to him. On the lefthand column I go to number 3 Grandson, that's Nate's relationship to him, where the two coordinates (3,4) meet, is our relationship, in this case Nate and I are first cousins once removed.  It easy enough, try it with some of the ancestors you find on this blog.

Instructions:
Instructions:

  1. Select
two people in your family and figure out which ancestor they have in
common. For example, if you chose yourself and a first cousin, you
would have a grandparent in common.

  2. Look
at the top row of the chart (in blue) and find the first person's
    relationship to the common ancestor.

  3. Look
at the far left column of the chart (in blue) and find the second
person's relationship to the common ancestor.

  4. Move
across the columns and down the rows to determine where the row and
column containing these two relationships (from #2 & #3) meet.
This box is the relationship between the two individuals.
