Charles & Susan Evans 1850 census King George Co. VA

This following a record of the 1850 census.
I have not been able to find anything else about Charles and Susan earlier than thison line. I have been told that her family  was Prior. Now I have seen in the 1830 or 1840 KG census that there is a Nancy Evans who is a close neighbor to a Prior woman and as I have noticed these farmers aren't looking very far for wives and husbands. There are some discrepancies in Charles' age if you look at the 1860 census I believe he is still around the same age.  The daughter that is listed as Ann Evans is I believe the same Susanna (Evans) that is married to Bassett Bumbry since in the 1860 census they are in the the same page ogf the census and the the ages match as well. I would like some verification if someone can help me out with that. I also suspect that Peggy is the Margaret Evens that marries  Randolph Pinkard in 1867 although there is something funky in that marriage too, which I'll touch on later. I would appreciate some help there too, if someone can verify that. Somewhere I recollect seeing Charles death record, I'll post that when I find it. I believe the cause of death was listed as dropsy.

Marriage record of Albert Grymes

The first one I want to put in is for Albert Grymes. The records dates are a bit funny but somehow there is a connection. It seems his first (wife) was named Mary Butler a name which also turns up among his children in the 1880 census. I never could find him in the King George census before 1870 now we see that he came from Caroline County. It looks like his parents could be Nelson and Rosa, they would be Percy and Sarah's Great Grandparents.

New helpful records found. You're gonna love these.

Well I have some new exciting material that I found recently. Would you believe marriage records. I found them for a few branches of the family so I'll share what I've found. Something I've found very interesting about these records is that it gives us the names of mothers and fathers of the bride and groom so that in cases where we didn't know the wife maiden name or her mother and father, in many cases these records give us both. Rather than crowd this post I think I'll post the records one at a time.

The work of Paul Heinegg

Paul Heinegg has done extensive research on free Black families of the upper south. We are related to some of the families mentioned in his book;

FREE AFRICAN AMERICANS OF VIRGINIA, NORTH CAROLINA SOUTH CAROLINA, MARYLAND AND DELAWARE

This is another place where a lot of research is still to be done in order to determine just who is who but it gives us a very good picture of where and how to start looking. I really do think the most info is going to be found in the county records and libraries of King George and some of the the neighboring counties. Once we start though, you never know when something will pop up out of the blue.

It just keeps getting better!

Nancy Pope has joined the ranks of the blog authors. Another representative of the Charles Gray side of the family, Nancy is my second cousin because we share a common Evans greatgrandparents and my third cousin because we share common Grymes gggreadparents, fun huh? She has already started making contributions here and I know she has been doing some work prior finding the blog. I'm looking forward to seeing more of her contributions. Welcome aboard Nancy.

Charles and Julia (Pryor) Evans

Special Schedule 1890 census
Surviving Soldiers, Sailors and Marines and Widows etc.
who survived the war of the rebellion.
Our Charles Evans  is third on the list.

Charles Evans II was born in 1842. The first timeI found him was in the 1850 census. This was the first census that they identfied every member of the family. Before that, they named the head of the house and listed every  other person by sex and age group and race or free or slave status. I believe in 1850 they started using a separate form for slaves. The next time I see him is in the 1860 census, still with his parents.
I could not find him or his father in the 1870 census, I will have to try ivins or ivings I have found them listed like that before if I remember correctly. I did find Julia Pryor. Julia is listed with a few children so I m not sure if Pryor is a married or maiden name so we have to find some more answers before we can be sure of her status.
In 1880 I find Charles and Julia with their childen. The 1890 census was destroyed but luckily the 1890 schedule of civil war vets was not and I found that our Charles Evans served for 1 year 1863 - 1864 in the Union Navy abord a vessel called the Wallkill.

Charles Evans 1844
Julia (Pryor) Evans 1842
Elizabeth  Evans 1862
Thomas  Evans 1871
Nancy Jane Evans 1872
Agnes Ann  Evans 1873 may
Mary Jane Evans 1875
Stansbury Evans 1877 mar
Lola Evans 1883 jan
Henry Evans 1887 oct
Albert  Evans 1888 dec

Above is a list of the family that is composed of the 1880 census which goes to Stansbury and the rest I must have found on the 1900 census which I can't seem to find now.

Nancy Jane Evans Gray

Nancy Jane Evans Gray

Nancy is the daughter of Charles Evans II  and Julia Pryor ( I'm lucky I just found Julia in the 1870 census before she married Charles Evans)

Here is a clipping of the 1980 census Nancy 7 years old, is living on a farm with her parents Charles and Julia Evans along with step-sister Elizabeth and siblings Thomas, Agnes, Mary and Stansbury. And look who is on the neighboring farm ***            Click on the census clipping if it's too small for you to see.
This is the last time I have found Nancy living with Charles and Julia the 1890 census was damaged and by 1900 she is married to Peyton Gray and raising her own family.

Sarah Grymes and George Dunlop

For the benefit of our Moorestown / Mt. Laurel cousins,  I'll trace our Grymes / Grimes connection.               If you remember Sarah Grymes in 1880 is living with father Albert Grymes on the family farm, in King George county, Virginia, along with 17 year old Allen (my ggrandfather) and other siblings. Sarah is 13 years old. She will be 23 more or less when the 1890 census takes place. I'm just adding here that Sarah and Percy Grymes are first cousins.

Unfortunately many of the census records of 1890 were destroyed. Although some may be found occasionally at local courthouses or libraries or other archives, the federal records except for a few states are not to be found.
The 1900 Census finds George and Sarah renting a farm in King George county, Virginia and living with 3 daughters and a lodger.

  • George Dunlop   head   39
  • Sarah                   wife   32
  • Maria                   dau     8
  • Martha                 dau     3
  • Janett                   dau     2
  • Daniel Williams   lodger 60

Fortunately for us the column #10 on the 1900 census asks - # of years married and George and Sarah have entered 10. So we can see that they were married about 1890.  Let's see what 1910 has in store for us.  By the way, George is on line 79 if you're having a problem with the handwriting.

In the 1910 census we see three more children. 9 year old Izora then 2 boys 7 and 4,  named after their grandfathers. We see that they are no longer renting and are now living adjacent to other some Grymes farms in King George county, Virginia. It sure would be nice if any of you have any photographs of these farms, you might ask Marie or Virginia I have a feeling they might just have something we can scan and post here. Maybe uncle Junie has some too. Do any of you know any cousins still in the area?

  • George Dunlop   head
  • Sarah                   wife
  • Mariah                  dau
  • Martha                  dau
  • Janett                    dau
  • Izora                     dau
  • George                  son
  • Albert                    son

Charles Gray and Izora Dunlop
Charles Gray

In the 1920 census we find George and Sarah living with the 2 youngest boys and Charles H. Gray and his wife Izora. Still in Virginia.

In 1930 which is the last census we can access to date,  I found Uncle Charlie and aunt Izora living in East Riverton, New Jersey. on Land avenue right around the corner from where I was brought up. Hopefully from here you guys can help us fill in the blanks.

  • Charles Gray head   33
  • Izora              wife   29
  • Logan             son     9
  • Roberta           dau     2
  • Virginia          dau     1mo

Peyton Gray

I searched for a long time for  Peyton Gray on the online census reports and for the longest time I couldn't find anything. Then one day I happened to be browsing through the King George county, Shiloh district census schedule for 1880 and, Voila!

  • George Filmore 35 head
  • Mary Filmore    35 Wife
  • Julia Filmore     25 dau
  • Peyton Gray      19 son
  • Simon Gray       20 son
  • Sarah Filmore    14 dau
  • Howard Filmore  3 son
  • Lizzie Filmore      5 dau

Now is there any one of you reading this that can help me out here? I'm fairly sure that this is our own Peyton Gray but it would be best to have some kind of confirmation. It would also be nice to know just what the story is with the different family names Filmore and Gray.

Here also we have a case of Julia Filmore being just 10 years younger than George and Mary Filmore yet is listed as the daughter. She almost has to be a sibling or relative that is being cared for by them.

Some New Blood on the Blog

I want to welcome some more cousins to the Evans Grimes Gray -King George, VA Roots blog.
I was in contact with Richard Gray on Facebook and he said he would send some more relatives this way.
It looks like he has sent some already. If anyone is interested in writing anything about the family you can use the comments sections or you're welcome to contribute as a blog author. That just involves me sending you an invitation and you'll need to have a google or gmail account, either of which can be had online in a few minutes.

There is also a Family Tree topic on the Grimes Family Group Facebook page, where you can leave comments. If you have any questions at all don't be shy I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.

If any of you are interested in creating or have already started an actual family tree using some kind of genealogical software let us know. While I've done a lot of research, I haven't actually organized anything like that.

The people in the family that I know of having done some work in the area of our family history are Virginia Winchester and Natasha Gray. Try to get these ladies involved if you can. Also any old family photographs or letters would be interesting if you have any.

Since I type really slowly I'm gong to stop here. Again welcome to you all and I hope to be hearing from you.

    Peace,
     Stacy Johnston Grimes
