Sarah Grymes and George Dunlop

For the benefit of our Moorestown / Mt. Laurel cousins,  I'll trace our Grymes / Grimes connection.               If you remember Sarah Grymes in 1880 is living with father Albert Grymes on the family farm, in King George county, Virginia, along with 17 year old Allen (my ggrandfather) and other siblings. Sarah is 13 years old. She will be 23 more or less when the 1890 census takes place. I'm just adding here that Sarah and Percy Grymes are first cousins.

Unfortunately many of the census records of 1890 were destroyed. Although some may be found occasionally at local courthouses or libraries or other archives, the federal records except for a few states are not to be found.
The 1900 Census finds George and Sarah renting a farm in King George county, Virginia and living with 3 daughters and a lodger.

  • George Dunlop   head   39
  • Sarah                   wife   32
  • Maria                   dau     8
  • Martha                 dau     3
  • Janett                   dau     2
  • Daniel Williams   lodger 60

Fortunately for us the column #10 on the 1900 census asks - # of years married and George and Sarah have entered 10. So we can see that they were married about 1890.  Let's see what 1910 has in store for us.  By the way, George is on line 79 if you're having a problem with the handwriting.

In the 1910 census we see three more children. 9 year old Izora then 2 boys 7 and 4,  named after their grandfathers. We see that they are no longer renting and are now living adjacent to other some Grymes farms in King George county, Virginia. It sure would be nice if any of you have any photographs of these farms, you might ask Marie or Virginia I have a feeling they might just have something we can scan and post here. Maybe uncle Junie has some too. Do any of you know any cousins still in the area?

  • George Dunlop   head
  • Sarah                   wife
  • Mariah                  dau
  • Martha                  dau
  • Janett                    dau
  • Izora                     dau
  • George                  son
  • Albert                    son

Charles Gray and Izora Dunlop
Charles Gray

In the 1920 census we find George and Sarah living with the 2 youngest boys and Charles H. Gray and his wife Izora. Still in Virginia.

In 1930 which is the last census we can access to date,  I found Uncle Charlie and aunt Izora living in East Riverton, New Jersey. on Land avenue right around the corner from where I was brought up. Hopefully from here you guys can help us fill in the blanks.

  • Charles Gray head   33
  • Izora              wife   29
  • Logan             son     9
  • Roberta           dau     2
  • Virginia          dau     1mo

Peyton Gray

I searched for a long time for  Peyton Gray on the online census reports and for the longest time I couldn't find anything. Then one day I happened to be browsing through the King George county, Shiloh district census schedule for 1880 and, Voila!

  • George Filmore 35 head
  • Mary Filmore    35 Wife
  • Julia Filmore     25 dau
  • Peyton Gray      19 son
  • Simon Gray       20 son
  • Sarah Filmore    14 dau
  • Howard Filmore  3 son
  • Lizzie Filmore      5 dau

Now is there any one of you reading this that can help me out here? I'm fairly sure that this is our own Peyton Gray but it would be best to have some kind of confirmation. It would also be nice to know just what the story is with the different family names Filmore and Gray.

Here also we have a case of Julia Filmore being just 10 years younger than George and Mary Filmore yet is listed as the daughter. She almost has to be a sibling or relative that is being cared for by them.

Some New Blood on the Blog

I want to welcome some more cousins to the Evans Grimes Gray -King George, VA Roots blog.
I was in contact with Richard Gray on Facebook and he said he would send some more relatives this way.
It looks like he has sent some already. If anyone is interested in writing anything about the family you can use the comments sections or you're welcome to contribute as a blog author. That just involves me sending you an invitation and you'll need to have a google or gmail account, either of which can be had online in a few minutes.

There is also a Family Tree topic on the Grimes Family Group Facebook page, where you can leave comments. If you have any questions at all don't be shy I'll try to answer to the best of my ability.

If any of you are interested in creating or have already started an actual family tree using some kind of genealogical software let us know. While I've done a lot of research, I haven't actually organized anything like that.

The people in the family that I know of having done some work in the area of our family history are Virginia Winchester and Natasha Gray. Try to get these ladies involved if you can. Also any old family photographs or letters would be interesting if you have any.

Since I type really slowly I'm gong to stop here. Again welcome to you all and I hope to be hearing from you.

    Peace,
     Stacy Johnston Grimes
